Active Assignment for the Week of 16 to 23 April: In the Dark
Technical restrictions teach us new ways to use our cameras and make us see things in different ways. Let’s challenge ourselves this week by shooting in the dark. You can take your photos at night, or simply in a dark room. There are many great examples of this kind of photography. Here are some ideas:
1. Long exposures with movement. Star trails, images of traffic at night, etc.
2. Street lights and city lights at night (think Vegas, baby!).
3. A dark room with a lamp illuminating only part of the image.
There are some groups on flickr devoted to this kind of photography. Look around to get inspiration:
The No-Flash Night Shots group.
The Nocturnes – Night Photography group.
The Urban Night Shots group.
Also: fireworks!
Restriction: don’t use the flash on your camera (or any external flash/strobe).
Dare: Get some people in your shot!
WIT: Steady tripod, 4sec exposure and a warm jacket as it was very cool on the docks last night! 
I quite like your composition of this photo. The movement of lines in the frame works nicely.
Did you employ any particular techniques in capturing this photo?
I have to admit that night shots are my fav, and when I saw this weeks assignment I just HAD to make the time to get a coluple of shots. As to the techniques used, not really… 6 second exposure with a tripod.
I really fell in love withg night shots when we went to Europe for this last christmas, you can check out the others in my "Night Moves" set.

I have to agrre about the science fiction look. I still do not know what I see exactly but I imagine it is a device to open wormholes to other universes. i like that.
