Graffiti New York

2 Comments | This entry was posted on Jul 05 2010

Decades after the movement globalized, New York is still the mecca of graffiti culture. Painting there is a badge of honor, with graffiti artists from around the globe making pilgrimages to New York for that purpose. This is the city where it all began, yet few know the back story.
Graffiti New York fills that gap, detailing the concepts, aesthetics, ideals, and social structures that have served as a cultural blueprint for graffiti movements across the world. The book features approximately

Active Assignment for the Week of 16 to 23 April: In the Dark

Technical restrictions teach us new ways to use our cameras and make us see things in different ways. Let’s challenge ourselves this week by shooting in the dark. You can take your photos at night, or simply in a dark room. There are many great examples of this kind of photography. Here are some ideas:

1. Long exposures with movement. Star trails, images of traffic at night, etc.
2. Street lights and city lights at night (think Vegas, baby!).
3. A dark room with a lamp illuminating only part of the image.

There are some groups on flickr devoted to this kind of photography. Look around to get inspiration:

The No-Flash Night Shots group.
The Nocturnes – Night Photography group.
The Urban Night Shots group.
Also: fireworks!

Restriction: don’t use the flash on your camera (or any external flash/strobe).
Dare: Get some people in your shot!

WIT: Steady tripod, 4sec exposure and a warm jacket as it was very cool on the docks last night! :-)

I’m currently in Melbourne Australia after a weekend in Alice Springs. I’ll be posting the Alice Springs shots in the next few days but I decided to work on a few urban shots to break up the Outback a little bit. Melbourne is the largest city I’ve been in since leaving New York City almost a month ago. It’s Australia’s second largest city behind Sydney with a population around three million people. I really enjoy Melbourne. The city reminds me of New York City on a smaller scale. Refurbished old warehouses, Victorian architecture and a vibrant art scene are good ways to describe this bustling urban center. Melbourne has certainly become one of Australia’s cosmopolitan centers and shows no sign of slowing down. Evidence of Australia’s resource -rich economy riding the tsunami-like wave of China is clearly evident in Melbourne. Construction is booming and most people here seem quite upbeat about the future. The city is certainly alive in this prosperous time for Australia

One of my favorite parts of Melbourne is the graffiti around the city as seen in the photo above. It seems to be almost controlled and instead of detracting from the beauty of the city I feel it really gives Melbourne some wonderful character and highlights its place as the arts center of Australia.

I’m currently traveling the world. I have an HDR travel blog if you’re interested in following me. It’s www.LostManProject.com. Cheers from Melbourne Australia!

Born out of the necessity Pannell recognized during her years of teaching theatre to young people in community centers and public and arts schools, here at last is a collection of monologues and scenes that today’s inner-city kids can relate to. Both literally and figuratively, these brief dramatic works speak the language of contemporary pre-teens and teens (ages 8-18), bringing to light the reality of their city lives. Not only for theater instructors and their students, REAL will be useful to

graffiti

Behind the shops on 19th Avenue between Osborn Rd and Mulberry Dr, there are several walls dedicated to graffiti art murals. I’ve always thought this was a good thing. Give people a space to be creative. Mind you, I think graffiti art and graffiti — otherwise knows as “tagging” — are two different things. The former is art, and enhances walls that are otherwise barren and boring; the latter mars walls that belong to people who would rather keep them bare, and consists of nothing more than initials that take little artistry to apply. I, personally, am happy to see this creative outlet in my neighborhood, and I wish the kids who paint initials on walls would stop doing that and join in painting art on walls like these instead.

The business owners whose rear walls are painted have all agreed to allow the graffiti artists to paint here, and the paints are donated by Montana Spanish Paints.

Putting the Pieces Together: The Graffiti Model for Indie Filmmaking

1 Comment | This entry was posted on Jun 27 2010

Want to see what do-it-yourself filmmaking is all about? Benjamin Morgan did, so he made the low-budget, scraped together film Quality of Life. Shot on location in San Francisco’s Mission District, the movie sheds light on a clandestine graffiti subculture, telling an authentic and gripping story of two young graffiti writers whose friendship and lives unravel after they get arrested. Morgan’s book delves into how he and his crew were able to build their movie out of nothing, get it screened to

Fabled as a region that embraces freedom of expression in all of its guises, the San Francisco Bay Area has long been a world-renowned cultural hotbed. Bay Area Graffiti is the first comprehensive retrospective of the area’s vibrant contemporary street-art scene. Documented by the distinctive photographic eye of Steve Rotman, his images showcase the innovative art made all over the Bay Area, as well as how it blends into the stunning landscapes. Having befriended so many of the Bay Area’s major
